Most grout is cement based and is porous. As with any porous surface, water and contaminants can be absorbed, and the grout has become discoloured (usually darker). Dirty grout will be worse in heavy use areas such as kitchens.
Why does the grout get so dirty?
Dirty grout is most likely to be caused by the use of excess water and chemicals. The grime is absorbed into the chemical solution, and if not picked up off the floor can be absorbed into the lowest and most porous point (grout lines) where the water evaporates and leaves the grime residues behind, creating dirty grout lines.
Can dirty grout be cleaned?
Intensive cleaning such as a Deep Dirt Extraction treatment can usually restore dirty grout.
To help prevent dirty grout from recurring, always make sure that porous grout is sealed with a high-quality penetrating sealer (such as a Stain-Guarding treatment), and consider using waterproof grout in kitchen, bathroom or heavy use areas.
